She brought me to her favorite place today. She ran off into the concrete maze, daring me to come find her in the pitch black of the shadows. One hand on the wall and another right in front of me. One step at a time. Just her breathing and the faint scent of incense to guide me. Outside, she pinned me to the grass and asked the words I didn’t have the courage to say. I felt her tremble on top of me. The park ranger flashed his light at us and I squeezed her hand with joy on our walk of shame to my car. I said yes, obviously.
